Completion of Phase 1 – circular soft strip demolition – Weesperzijde 190

Vastint Netherlands, in cooperation with Adex Groep, has successfully completed Phase 1 of the redevelopment of Weesperzijde 190: the circular soft strip demolition. During the past months a lot of hard work has gone into removing all the fixtures and fittings from the building. From doors to toilet bowls, and from reception desks to ceiling panels, all kinds of materials and components were stripped out of the building.

In total, more than 5.2 million kilos of material were stripped out, 97% of which were recycled or reused! 221 tonnes were stripped out for immediate reuse.

The aim was to carry out the strip-out work in a circular manner as much as possible, in order to limit the impact on the environment. When dismantling all the materials, careful thought was given to whether the materials could be repurposed elsewhere in their original form or disposed of for recycling. We were able to do this with the bulk of the materials! Unfortunately, 3% of the materials was not suitable to be reused or recycled.

Repurposing and recycling the materials has resulted in a positive CO2 impact of no less than 272 tonnes of CO2! This is equivalent to 2,264 return flights between Amsterdam and Paris.

In addition, a large part of the work was carried out using electric equipment instead of diesel-driven machines, achieving a further reduction in CO2 emissions of more than 36 tonnes, equivalent to 302 return flights between Amsterdam and Paris.

All in all, a successful completion of the first phase that bodes well for the further progress of the redevelopment. Phase 2 – asbestos removal – will start in September. As soon as the contractor for this work is confirmed, we will let you know exactly how the asbestos will be removed. There will therefore be little activity in and around the building during the summer months.
